Kitchen Trotter – A Review

I have always had this desire to learn about new cultures, places and countries and this includes learning about their food as well. Emma has inherited my love of discovery so when we were offered the chance to review the new Kitchen Trotter cooking kits and learn more about Indonesia, I knew it would be something we would both enjoy.

The cooking kits by Kitchen Trotter are unique in their concept: they offer a culinary world tour in a box. With authentic products, carefully selected and sourced, the box delivers an explosion of fresh and novel tastes, each month different and enticing!

Although the boxes are primarily designed for the foodie and the connoisseur, I found out that they are perfect as an introduction to new tastes for small children too. Tonight, Emma and I decided to cook a noodle dish from the booklet that accompanies the box and it has been a very pleasant experience for both of us. Not only the bonding and the spending time together but also the chance to sniff, taste and chat about various ingredients that make Indonesian cuisine unique.

The booklet I mentioned above contains five recipes, a starter, three main courses and a desert in which you can use the amazing products in the box but there is plenty more left once you have used up the recipes so you can do your own research and find more about the respective cuisine and try even more new recipes.

We loved the Indonesian cuisine as presented by the Kitchen Trotter box as it is flavoursome and mild. We weren’t very sure about the fish paste that goes into everything but we were happy to give it a try and adjust the quantities to our palate. The dishes we produced so far are well balanced, with plenty of veggies and meat we all like and we look forward to try the rest of the recipes, especially the sweet one!

Would we subscribe to the Kitchen Trotter?

Yes, the unique culinary experiences they offer are definitely worth it, especially when your child is eager to learn about new places and cultures. There is no better introduction to a place than through its food, in my opinion!

The only niggle I have with the box is its price. Although I totally understand the fact that the sourcing and import of the products cannot come cheap, I still think £29.99 per month would be out of our budget at the moment. For us as a family with only one income at the moment, I would say the occasional box, every three to four months would be more suitable.

Disclosure: we have received a Kitchen Trotter box for the purpose of this review. All opinions expressed are entirely our own.

The half-term holiday…that wasn’t!

If you follow us on Instagram or read our posts regularly here, you know how excited we were about our half-term break and a trip to Greece to see relatives.

But things have a way of not happening as we expect them to and last Saturday, the day before we were supposed to travel, Emma started running a fever. We took her to Dalriada and explained the situation but the doctor on call reassured us it was only a viral thing and it would probably pass within a few days.

Last Sunday was a total nightmare in my books. We travelled from 11 a.m till 11 p.m., 12 hours straight; a lot of driving, changing two flights and getting lost in Athens upon arrival. All with a feverish child who needed carried and pumped with Paracetamol and Ibuprofen every two hours or so. She was very good and never complained but rest eluded us as the same scenario continued at night. I had to be up every two hours, checking her, offering drinks and fever relief so not much sleep for this mama.

On Monday, Emma seemed better and Alex had a busy day, filled with paperwork and appointments so we just tagged along and tried to enjoy the warmth (a very unusual 21 degrees!):

It's over 20 degrees in Athens. I need a wardrobe upgrade urgently 😎

By the time we arrived in Patra, where my in laws live, Emma was spiking up a fever again but we put it down to tiredness and after a lovely dinner prepared by my mother in law with loads of Greek feta and fresh bread as obligatory side dishes, we headed for our hotel to rest.

We had planned so much for our three day stay in Patra but at the top of our priorities was resting and enjoying time as a family of three.

But by noon, Emma was complaining of tiredness and in the evening, as we were visiting the local organic market and buying all sorts of goodies to bring home, she unexpectedly spiked a fever again. She hadn’t all day so I knew in my gut that things weren’t as they should be.

As things weren’t bad enough, shortly afterwards, a panicked auntie burst into our hotel room arrived with an unrequited thermometer, making our already depleted energy resources drain instantly and leading to a lot of bickering between Alex and myself. You know, I kept telling myself, my big fat Greek wedding isn’t so f….ing funny when you are not the onlooker!

On Wednesday we managed to see a local pediatrician who immediately diagnosed otitis(infection of the ear) and bronchitis(inflammation in the bronchial tubes). Emma was put on a strong antibiotic and was also given the blue inhaler to use for a week, to relieve the symptoms.

As Wednesday was our last full day in Patra we steered clear of the panicky auntie and headed to see the grandparents. Emma had dreamt of a number of things regarding this visit: having loads of bougatsa, a sweet custard pie she adores usually but had no appetite for due to the fever, and picking oranges off the tree in her grandparents’ garden.

She managed to gather enough energy to do the latter, here is my favourite picture, her Papou showing her the technique of picking a lemon off the tree:

Thursday was back to packing and travelling again, we had to drive back to Athens as we were catching a flight back to Dublin insanely early on Friday morning. We were all physically and emotionally wrecked when we finally arrived in Athens, so dinner was a quick and noisy affair of chicken skewers and salad, followed by a last stop in a sweet shop for chocolate:

I honestly wish we could rewind last week and start all over again. It has been a week full of worries and fighting, which has left me completely drained. I slept most of yesterday, in an attempt to recover my strength. Emma is feeling much better and is back to school today.

Oh, well, roll on Easter holidays, with no illness and loads of moments to cherish and enjoy, pretty please!

#SummerLove with James Villas

How do you choose a favourite from a host of beautiful summer holiday memories, created over the course of over 9 years?

I suppose condensing is the name of the game, but how do you bottle up and concentrate millions of happy moments and fragments made of evenings spent with friends chattering away; splashing in the sea way past sunset; tens of cones of delicious ice-cream and too much tiropita, the delicious yet so fattening Greek cheese pie ?

For Alex, who is originally from Greece and who suffers from severe SAD (seasonal affective disorder) during the winter months, a perfect holiday will always mean loads and loads of sunshine, getting tanned and looking like a berry by September. His ideal habitat would have two common elements, the blue sky and the even bluer sea.

Paradise in hubby’s eyes. Ithaka island, summer 2015.

Holidays are, for him, designated to recharging batteries, enjoying loads of yummy, fresh food and catching up with friends and relatives we hadn’t seen for a whole year.

Emma is her father’s daughter and LOVES the sun and the water so our summer holiday accommodation needs to be close to the sea, with safe, shallow and clean beaches and plenty of activities for little ones. Oh, and I almost forgot, essential detail, it MUST have a traditional Greek bakery close by, as this girl can eat her weight in filo pastry pies during the summer. She is not indifferent to the spinach and feta cheese variations but her absolute favourite is the sweet custard one, locally called bougatsa :-).

Enjoying some bougatsa, what else :-)? Halkidiki, July 2013.

And how about this mummy, what does she like about a summer holiday?

Ideally, I would love to be able to chill in the shade and read for the whole of the summer but this hasn’t been possible with a small child around in the past 6 years.

Our first baby free getaway. I am sure Alex had other plans for it, but I was quite content with a book, for the whole of those three days, haha! Zante, summer 2010.

I also love to discover new places and stay in lovely hotels and hubby has treated us to some amazing weekend stays over the years.

I love routine and well-planned in advance holidays but Alex has a wicked sense of adventure, which led last year to an impromptu Ramadan visit to Istanbul, which we all enjoyed tremendously:

My beautiful, multicultural girl. Istanbul, July 2015.

We are a unique mix of personalities, dreams and aspirations but we have in common one essential thing: our love for each other and the desire to spend all the wonderful moments we are given on this earth together.

A blurry one of the two of us. Halkidiki, 2011.

We plan many more holidays together, having fun and discovering new places and I do hope that one of them will be in Cyprus. We had talked about it many times, since it is only a short flight away from Thessaloniki, where we are usually based during the summer, but we never got the opportunity to go and explore that part of the world.

This is my entry to James Villas photography competition to win a week of holidays in one of their luxurious accommodation there. If we win, we will get a chance to enjoy an amazing holiday that ticks all the boxes for the three of us, with plenty of beautiful beaches, a pool to chill by and plenty of fresh bougatsa from the village’s bakery :-)!

Wish us luck!

Kaya Jewellery – A Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

baby girl-Kaya

One of the reasons I LOVE blogging is that I get to work with so many wonderful brands and unique companies!

Take Kaya Jewellery, for example, the latest of the brilliant companies I have had the privilege to work with recently. Not only do they design stunning jewellery for any occasion (I will give you a round-up in a wee second) but they have also a strong penchant for charity work and support actively the Eduki Foundation and through them, the education of 10 beautiful children in Gambia!

Kaya charity work

Where do I start now, the Kaya jewellery is so beautiful and diverse, I am afraid I won’t be able to do it proper justice in a blog post!

First of all, and down to the nitty gritty, I love the fact that delivery is free and fast (our order arrived within 24 hours) and that orders come presented in beautiful and again, in a choice of two options of beautiful, FREE gift wrapping!

Beautiful packaging. Kaya Jewellery #review #blogger

Their jewellery ranges from occasions (like the fast approaching Valentine’s Day) to children’s (new baby, girl and boy) to mum jewellery.

My absolute favourites have to be the Mum and Me and the 3 generation range, I cannot think of anything more touching that seeing granny, mother and daughter wearing the same, matching bracelets or necklaces, as a visible recognition of the strong bond of love that unites them!

Their Mother’s Day range include a huge variety of personalised pendants and charms (all beautiful and hard to decide upon!), engraved necklaces and delicate bracelets:

If you think this was all good news, wait till I tell you about the price range!

The baby jewellery starts at £14.95, the Mum and Me range varies between £41.90 and £47.90 and the 3 generations sets don’t go over £49.99. Actually, nothing goes on the site over £65 and for silver jewellery, I think it is quite the bargain!

So why don’t you start nice and early this year and head over to have a peep at their gorgeous Mother’s Day range and even possibly purchase for the most special woman in your life a beautiful, delicate and personalised memento?

Disclosure: Emma and I got a Mum and Me bracelet set, which we cannot wait to show off feature while in Greece next week. The opinions expressed in this post are entirely our own, we genuinely love the products and we will point Alex this way for Mother (and Daugher)’s Day gift ideas!

Half-term fun with Joules!

I am very excited writing this blog post. For several reasons, which I will hurry to jot down for you, so you can cheer along!

First of all, we are going on holidays to Greece on Sunday! If you have read my previous post, you would know that travelling created tonnes of enthusiasm in our family, so we are all sorts of giggly these days!

Secondly, and I still cannot believe Emma’s luck to have been chosen to try out some of the new spring-summer collection as we will be featuring Joules in Greece, ladies and gents!

Well, this mummy will only be featuring her slippers and matching pyjama bottoms she got at Christmas in the outlet in Kildare Village 🙂 but Emma gets a makeover for spring with beautiful items from the new collection!

Joules Tops Girls

Greece is still sort of cold at the moment, with similar temperatures like here and the weather forecasts did show rain for when we arrive, so Emma will be able to wear proudly her new rain coat. We did try it out here two days ago but with temperatures close to zero, we had to return it to the peg and wait for warmer days. Not too long though, I am sure Emma will make excellent use of it when in Patra, even on sunny days, as the material is soft and the coat feel light and is a lovely fit on her frame.

For little boys who could do with a new spring coat or a wardrobe freshening up, this is what caught my eye on the website:

I really love the fir of the jacket and the matching wellies, couldn’t get any better, both in terms of fashion style and practicality, could it?

For those cooler days, Joules has brought out, for both girls and boys, warm, cosy sweatshirt, guaranteed to keep the chills out but allow freedom of movement and loads of fun!

The theme of the summer collection is definitely the applique, how incredibly cute are these:

I wish you all oodles of fun this half term, whether you spend it home or away!

We will be keeping our readers posted with pictures from Greece on our Instagram page, do have a peek from time to time next week!

Thank you again, Joules, for gifting Emma with her lovely t-shirt, top and coat, we love them and will wear them ever so proudly!
