50 Shades of Grey (Movie Review by Hubby)

Last weekend, the debate was on, shall we go and see it as a couple or not. I resisted the invitation, hubby was very keen on watching it but the reviews were appalling. So we stayed in and watched “The Vow”, much more appropriate a story for Valentine’s weekend. We had watched it before, when it came out but Alex couldn’t remember much of it and it made for a very rare night in as a couple and led to very interesting conversations in the morning. If you haven’t watched it, I would encourage you to. It is based on a true story and it leaves one feeling hopeful for the future, in spite of trauma and apparently insurmountable obstacles. Love wins, even when it needs to take a new shape and form and start afresh. On the other hand, I am so glad we didn’t go to watch 50 Shades of Grey together that evening. I am so glad I didn’t cave in to the pressure to “act cool” as a couple and go …

Supporting Northern Ireland small businesses: the BubbleBum

I have been living in Northern Ireland since 2007 and I have come to consider this little welcoming and green country my own. I feel privileged to have been approached and asked to write blog reviews for two small businesses in Northern Ireland recently. I will introduce the first to you tonight. When the brilliant mind behind the BubbleBum (I know, genius name, right?) asked us if we loved to road test one, we nearly jumped for joy! The concept is simple yet innovative: this is one light weight car booster seat, suitable for children aged between 4-11 years (15-36kgs) and to be used in conjunction with a 3 point adult seat belt. You can easily inflate and use the BubbleBum almost everywhere: in a taxi, in a childminder’s car, on holidays or at the back of a small car like mine. The inflatable booster seat folds up neatly when not in use and comes complete with a carry bag. A shoulder positioning strap is also provided so that your child can sit safely in …

Emma’s January Reviews

Emma enjoys being a mummy blogger’s offspring and this January was rich in beautiful products she got to try and enjoy. Our most special item was actually sent out at the end of December by Zapf Creation and brought comfort to her, as a bereaved sibling. Baby George came in the post a few days before Christmas and I decided to give it to her straight away, instead of saving him as from Santa. Emma misses her brother more than she wants to admit. She tries to be brave for me, especially on my sad days but I know that the reality of what she is missing will forever stay with her and will grow with time. I cannot replace her brother. I cannot be the playmate he was meant to be. I cannot take the ache away. But I can at least give her the comfort of a toy named like her baby brother and fill her arms with it. She loves her baby George toy. She still plays with it daily, even after …

Healthy January

I haven’t had a very healthy January. Between recovering from the big blow that the first Christmas without our baby was and surviving Georgie’s first birthday, I needed a lot of comfort food and  chocolate. I don’t even like chocolate but grief would do that to you. Change you into someone unrecognizable at times. But I have tried, on my “good days” to choose right. So when British Lion Eggs asked me to take their health challenge and…eat eggs in the process, I enthusiastically agreed! I have never been one to worry excessively about my weight, my fat or my sugar intake were never monitored closely so I didn’t know a lot about cholesterol in eggs. A couple of years ago, after studying about the Paleo diet and the theory behind it, I decided that as a way of living, it was more coherent than most fad diets that would encourage you to eat a restricted group of foods and nutrients, creating havoc in your body. Now, I was too happy to read that indeed, …

January health product review

January is always a “blah” month, wellbeing experts say. The holiday letdown, the extra weight accumulated during Christmas, the dark evenings and cold days, the New Year resolutions that we weren’t able to keep, they all lead to low moods. This year, we were lucky enough to be sent a number of health products to review, all aiming to give us more energy, keep us in good form and combat those January blues. We have been avid consumers of vitamin C since we travelled to New York a few years back and we were told by a friend and expert in alternative medicine to “abuse” the use of vitamin C before and  after our long flights. “One every hour, on the hour” proved to be precious advice and kept us energised and virus-free. So when I was asked to review the new Californian vitamin mix drink Emergen-C , I jumped at the opportunity. We were generously sent a mixture of the Super Orange and the Juicy Strawberry effervescent drinks which I put to use almost …
