Spare a thought…Christmas sorrows

I have been so bloomingly and naively unaware of grief at Christmas. Call me simple or sheltered or disconnected from reality or just pure blessed. For me, even as a child in Romania with not too much to receive at Christmas, the season has always been cheerful and sometimes even magical. I realised early on that Christmas, like any other major festive celebration over the year, is not so much about things or food as it is about people. So I trained myself to recreate a patch of magic on every special occasion, especially since we had Emma, using simple things like a Christmas tree, festive baking and most importantly, spending time together.

But this year the reality has hit me on various occasions: only yesterday, a Facebook friend was sharing the sad news of her dad’s passing. Just this morning I read a very raw article on Parentdish by  a lady who finds herself single at Christmas, after the failure of her 10 year marriage. Not to mention the blog entries or Facebook updates I have been landing on this week and the undiluted grief and utter devastation felt by parents who have lost a beloved child this year. The heartbreaking posts on children living in poverty on our very door steps or being affected and damaged by domestic violence. The media coverage of people living in slavery, of women being sexually exploited in this day and age!

For all these people, Christmas will not be a magical, happy time. It will be a raw, too much to bear, want to dig myself in a hole time.

Do I have solutions to their problems and grief? Oh, how I wish to reach out and give them a hug. How I want my words to comfort them and my small acts of kindness to soothe their pain. But it won’t do because what I can offer won’t give them back the most precious thing they yearn for: someone’s presence, someone’s love, someone’s provision…

So I do what I can. I spare a thought for them. A prayer. And a song on my blog.

And I also live with the sense of grace being bestowed on me. For “having it all”: a loving husband who is also an excellent provider(and foot masseur, as proven again last night), a healthy and clued-on child and a much expected and already loved baby on his way. I am also living with the very clear sense of undeserving blessings:  I have done nothing to merit to have more than others and grief could touch my life at any point. So I cherish what I have and I hold on to it with awe and gratefulness.

Merry Christmas everyone, may you be blessed beyond your wildest expectations!

Christmas presents for the healthy-minded loved ones

I know this post comes a bit too close to Christmas but if you are like me, always struggling to find appropriate Christmas presents for the healthy-minded ones in the family,  you might find it helpful.

A few weeks back the lovely people at Global Bounty invited our wee family to choose from and then sent us a selection of their wonderful products to try out. We got gluten-free morning cereal, a couple of natural supplements from Iceland (the country!) for children and grown-ups and loads of yummy and variously flavoured ginger chews.

Global BountyWe had a go at each and every one of them and were very satisfied with their quality.

The muesli have NO artificial sweeteners, nor sugar added, only pure oats and dried fruit, to my health-conscious hubby’s delight! Highly recommended for coeliacs and people suffering from thyroid dysfunctions, like myself.

The chews are great for ginger lovers, I use them for sore throats and bad breath, they work like magic! My favourite flavour at the moment is the peppermint but I like the orange as well.

To my delight, Emma, the pickiest member of our family, has taken to her kids’ multivitamins and has declared them “yummy.” Emma has a difficult time trying new things generally and the Lazy Town picture on the bottle seems to have done initially the trick for her. I am pleased she likes the taste as well as the picture as this means she will continue taking them. The company has in its children’s range a choice of of Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc and Vitamin D supplements so if your children get frequent colds and you struggle getting enough vitamins into them, this would be a good option!

I left what I consider the best product for the end:  the Hafkalk Ocean Calm Capsules, which contain natural marine magnesium and a mixture of vitamin B6 and C, a wonderful concoction which is bound to strengthen your immune system and improve your energy levels.  I keep these for myself, selfish me!

So if you have been struggling to find products your health-conscious family would like, then don’t hesitate to head over to the Global Bounty website and place an order with them!

Easy weeknight dinner: Just-Rol Puff Slice

Well, I am on my last hundred meters in this race, as they say in Romania. Baby is nearly here, I am bigger than I have even been and most days in no mood for cooking nor baking. But my lovelies still need fed ( I could survive on mince pies and baked potatoes, if it was up to me!) so I am cooking the easiest things I can think of.

Last night it was chicken curry, cumin rice and bought in naan bread. The sauce from a jar, oh the shame… They still ate it and said it was nice so many thanks to Home Bargains for their choice of sauces :-).

Tonight I remembered the Just-Rol puff pastry I bought the other day and decided to make some sort of home pizza.

Here are my ingredients ( I had chicken cooking in the pan while I was getting my puff pastry ready and added some grated Cheddar cheese at the end):

Pizza 001I rolled out my pastry onto a buttered lining sheet, added a drop of olive oil then my Caponata sauce (bought in Home Bargains) and the sliced pepper. The cooked chicken came next and I ended with a sprinkle of freshly grated Cheddar cheese.

Voila, ready to go in the oven!

Pizza 007It only takes 20 minutes to bake and the result is yummy, I can guarantee!

The Christmas Tag

I came across this in one of Victoria’s, from “Verily, Victoria Vocalises”, tweets and decided to join in the fun 🙂

I am also joining it in with #Magic Moments, at The Oliver’s Madhouse, because for me, Christmas and the weeks leading up to it have always been full of magic.

1.  Do you prefer a real Christmas tree or synthetic?

I love real Christmas trees as they remind me of Christmases past. Of my dad dragging in a shabby but really fragrant Christmas tree many times as late as Christmas Eve. Of decorating it with my brother to our hearts’ delight. Of tree needles you would have found in the carpet during the spring deep cleaning…But this year I am too pregnant to care and my little one too young to have preferences so we decided to put up only the fiber optic one. It looks well though, if I say so myself…

2.  You’re in a coffee shop, it’s December, what do you pick?

Oh, it must be a gingerbread man, a mince pie and a Christmas- flavoured drink, something that has cinnamon in it!

3.  Whats your favourite colour scheme for decorating the tree?

We normally go for the red and green, the season’s colour scheme but I love golden too.

4.  Giving or receiving?

Love giving, especially since I have had Emma. I actually start buying from November and usually end up with too many presents for her, to the dismay of hubby. This year I decided to pass the surplus on the friends’ children, so they will still be a blessing, my extra gifts!

5.  To mince pie or not to?

I do love a good mince pie, especially if served with brandy cream 🙂

6.  What’s your traditional Christmas lunch?

The really traditional turkey and trimmings, since I have moved to the UK. When I lived in Romania, it used to be stuffed vine leaves, pork sausages and steak, loads and loads of homemade starters, like Russian salad, deviled eggs and turkey meatballs in mayo(!!) and LOADS of booze!

7.  Christmas day fashion

Whatever I feel like wearing that morning. I never do Christmas jumpers, though 🙂

8.  What’s your favourite Christmas song?

9.  What’s your favourite Christmas film?

The Holiday with Cameron Diaz and Jude Law. Hilarious yet romantic!

10.  Open presents before or after lunch?

With a little child in the house, it’s definitely as soon as we get up on Christmas morning! I love it though as she gets to wear a new outfit and shoes for church, which makes the day feel even more special!

Do join in the Christmas tag for a bit of fun! Would love to read your posts for a wee nosey about how other people do Christmas :-)!
