Romanian soup and tips for your fussy eaters

The weather has turned bad on us. Hey, it’s October, right,  so it has every right to do so(pun intended)!

In our household October equals excitement on various levels.

For one thing, daddy bear starts to feel a bit better concerning the weather and starts to enjoy things more. He suffers from what I call seasonal and locational melancholy from May until the end of September: he misses his home country, the sunshine and the warmth and only recovers from mourning for it once the weather turns cooler there as well…

Emma starts getting excited come September about a couple of things: the imminent(for her!) birthday celebrations in November and Halloween. Of course, the older she gets, the more she understands and wants to participate in Halloween as a dress-up, have-fun celebration and she gets truly excited at the thought of witch lollipops( yes, Mothercare do them!), chocolate pumpkin treats(Home Bargains, 67p per bag of 20) and not-so-scary lanterns in the house.

As for me, it’s comfort food cooking season! This year, the pumpkin craze started really early on Pinterest and inspired me to order my pumpkin puree which will lead to tasty pies and soups in the weeks to come. But for me, as a Romanian girl, autumn equaled heart warming, home made soups and  I have kept the tradition in our family.

To tell you the truth, I felt compelled to introduce more Romanian foods into our diets a couple of years back, when Emma was about two. She had become a typical fussy eater who would have given me a headache every evening by turning her nose to almost everything I cooked. Things wouldn’t have turned this way, maybe, if as a result, she hadn’t developed severe constipation and had to be seen by several doctors in the attempt to make her feel better. Of course, the doctors couldn’t do much for us as the root of the problem rested with her disastrous eating and had no pathological causes.

In the beginning she turned her nose to my Romanian soup because it had veggies in it(and she was firmly convinced she didn’t like veggies!) but we managed to convince her to give it a try by using the usual tricks of the fussy eating trade. We put up a common front and made a point of eating it as a main course with plenty of “mmmm”, “this is yummy”, “tasty soup” addressed at each other, not her. Naturally, she became curious and had a taste when she realised it was chicken soup(as she liked chicken at the time).

Introducing veggies was a bit trickier but we did it progressively. In the beginning, she only had potato from the soup, that was ok but we talked about the other veggies she rejected: “Uuuu, look, Emma, this is carrot.” “Yes, that is celery. Celery helps you go to the toilet.” “Mmmm, yummy, sweet red pepper.”

Soon she had added the carrots and the peppers and so this autumn I got more adventurous. I have continued to add new things, like freshly chopped tomato, parsley and green beans. She has had no objections so far and actually seems to have this biological clock that is set for Monday noon, when she has to have soup for lunch!

So here is my recipe in handy pictures. I add this sour powder at the end, called borsh, but not to worry. The soup would be as yummy without it!

Basic ingredients. You can add other ingredients you like as leek, for example.

Get your chicken to boil first in water and stock. I use organic and it takes about an hour to get tender.

Barny Little Adventure Challenge Review

We have been privileged and were given the chance to review the new Barny bear-shaped sponge snacks last week. Not only that but because we were among the first 50 mummy bloggers to sign up for the Adventure Challenge(I guess all that early morning email checking pays off!), Emma received a Discovery Explore Bug Barn that took us on wonderful adventures this weekend!

Many thanks, BritMums and Barny!

With a small girl who has a VERY sweet tooth I am always on the lookout for snacks that are filling, nutritious but not necessarily unhealthy. I dose the treats carefully throughout the day, encouraging her to eat loads of fruit alongside/instead of sweet snacks and chocolate. The Barny snack meets my mummy criteria for a treat as it has 118 calories per serving and is enough to meet Emma’s daily sugar cravings(meaning she gets one of these little yummies a day and no more :-). The Barny snack definitely meets my little one’s criteria and she has already a preference for the “one with the chocolate inside, mummy!”

Delicious!

Delicious!

Now, for our Little Adventure Challenge days. We received our wonderfully packaged Barny parcel last Thursday and Emma got seriously excited about ” a present for me, mummy, for me??”

197I had my worries about the Bug Barn as she is generally a proper Miss and classifies toys into “girls’ and boys’ ones” but she totally surprised me by revealing a new facet I hadn’t seen before: Emma the explorer! She took to it with gusto and in no time was practicing bug catching with small, plastic animals in the living room.

Passionate explorer!

As our Barny parcel had a book on bugs as well, we decided to spend a wee while reading about ants, bugs and butterflies and Emma was particularly fascinated with the page that illustrated the butterfly life cycle, as you can see below.

222The culmination of the whole experience that evening, which was a total success for a budding explorer, was when, on our way back from town, Emma spotted a spider in the hallway, begged hubby to get her “explorer kit” out and scooped the poor thing into her special insect jar. She instantly named him Murly and insisted that he slept in her room that night!!

A proud little girl and a very frightened Murly 🙂

Since the exploring bit inside went so well on Thursday we decided to continue our adventures out on Saturday morning. We headed off for the Seaforde Exotic Butterfly Farm in Newcastle, county Down since Emma had shown so much interest in them on Thursday. We spent a glorious morning observing the butterflies, collecting leaves and exploring the grounds.

Aaah, these are really tickly, mummy!

Sunday was a bit windier but again, that didn’t deter us from furthering our adventures. We spent the afternoon in the Ormeau Park in Belfast, learning even more about nature and having a brilliant time together.

Thank you, Barny, we truly appreciated the snacks and the prompt you gave us to get out and explore the nature! We have thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

As stated above, this post is an entry for BritMums’ “Little Adventures Challenge” in partnership with Barny, the bear-shaped snack providing a little discovery in every bite. Find out more about Barny here.

Little girl update

Last night as I was putting Emma to bed I had this revelation: these girly moments will not be common occurrence from January since the new baby’s arrival is due to disturb our soothing night routines(and not only…). I felt a twinge of regret for my little girl as I know she will experience a wide (and probably wild!) range of emotions with the arrival of her baby brother. I felt empathy as she was lying down, half asleep and content by my side and for a moment saw the world through her little girl’s eyes; I promised myself I will do my very best to prevent her initial feelings of confusion, loneliness and fear. I vowed to myself not to push her aside and tell her what we usually say to older children in these circumstances: “be patient”, “you’re older, just wait for your turn”, “he is younger, just let him have the toy”…etc.

And then, I had an idea: yes, I have been posting photos of the bump on my Facebook page and written a blog post on pregnancy wear recently but the last time I wrote about Emma was a good few months ago , complaining about her still-toddlerish behaviour.  But Emma has changed so much this summer, she has grown in leaps and bounds not only physically but also spiritually and emotionally so I think a “little girl update” is overdue.

Soooo, where do I start?

I suppose by letting you know that she’s a very sweet and sensitive girl.

That like any other nearly-four-year-old is afraid of the dark and scary monsters in the cupboard and requires assistance to place shoes and coats in it :-).

That she LOVES her daddy to the point that he felt a bit disappointed when he found out we were having a boy this time as he thinks a boy can’t provide the same level of loving adoration!

That she is very bright and thinks in logical sequences( my next post will show her figuring out by herself how to use the tool in her new Bug Farm) , she took that from me, obviously ;-)!

That she still has the odd meltdown and, dare I say, calms down only at the mention of the wooden spoon??(Disclaimer: I hardly need to make use of it, the simple mention seems to work like a charm).

That she can be as infuriating as any four year old and could ask the “why?” question until you run dry of answers and say something rude back, like “Because I say so” or “Please let me drive now” or “Can you just be quiet for two minutes?”

That following her two months of Greek nursery this summer understands and says enough to get by but if hard pressed breaks into her own made-up “Greek” language.

That she loves reading, memorises books after a second reading but still prefers TV to fill up her time (to my frustration!!) One of our favourite books at the moments is Mother Knows Best, by Jill Murphy  orig.murphy.120x120.2because it addresses the “why” issue in a very satisfying way :-).

That she loves her brother already(and the feeling is mutual judging by the amount of reciprocal kicking when she is around the bump) and has asked numerous times why he can’t come out yet and now knows that he’s just “not ready yet.”

That she knows that Jesus is always with her (at least theoretically), that she “loves the church”(her own words) and that she enjoys immensely her Girls’ Brigade meetings and that she wants to sing on the “stage” when she grows up.

That she does drama and ballet this year and looks super cute in her proper ballet outfit.

That she is overly fussy with what she wears (been like this since Christmas when she watched Barbie intensively), that daddy can’t compliment mummy without making sure he says “and Emma looks gorgeous too” and that she goes into proper panic if she doesn’t get time to choose her outfit in the morning…

That she is a sweetheart and very loved and will make a great big sister!

Now, the other great idea I had while writing this post was to add a linky to it and allow all mummy bloggers out there to praise their precious offspring, like I have just done. The linky will come live later on today(by then I hope it will look like a proper, personalised linky and all) and will be on for a whole week so step by and honour your kids with some praise as well!
